Set across four open-world maps, Story mode holds your hand for the first hour or so while you learn the basics, but it doesn’t take long before you can start exploring at your own pace. The open-world maps in the story campaign feel appropriately expansive. The courses themselves are decently varied, even if personally I would have preferred a greater focus on shortcuts and alternate routes Construct new cars and boats from scratch, modify any vehicle in your collection, or unwind with guided builds, then take your creation for a drive! The controls feel weighty and responsive, and there’s plenty of feedback in its turns and drifts based on the size and specifications of your vehicle. That being said, Lego 2K Drive’s take on kart racing does feel extremely polished. You’ve, undoubtedly, played this game before. Every time I play a new “kart” racing game, I’m always disappointedly surprised at the lack of innovation within the genre-and Lego 2K Drive is nothing new in that respect. Instead, the web is spring-loaded and instant, cocooning them in bad handling until they hop it off. It’s a spin on the Blooper, the wide-eyed squid that squirts ink on your opponent’s screen but it lacks the slippery humour, the slight taunting pause before the Blooper gets down to his murky work, letting your enemy know that they have been suckered just before it happens. Take the spiderweb, which fastens onto foes and causes them to come unstuck. Story mode follows your journey from rookie racer to famous champion as you compete against a series of charismatic rivals The weapons that you collect during races, for example, lack the wit of those in Mario Kart. This is a wise decision, kitbashing with the choicest of kits, but it invites harsh contrast. What are those parts, exactly? For 2K Drive, developer Visual Concepts has looked to the likes of Forza Horizon, Mario Kart, and Crash Team Racing. The tongue-in-cheek story is all about competing in races across Bricklandia’s various regions to qualify for the Sky Cup Grand Prix. Whether they’re friend or foe, the cast is charming thanks to a surprisingly humorous script, capturing the chaotic tone of the movies and other games nicely.
